A Yogic Journey into the New Year: Reflect, Release, and Renew
As the new year approaches, it’s the perfect time to honour where you’ve been and align with where you want to go. My favourite way to do this is through a reflective practice that combines yoga and journaling—a ritual of movement, breath, and intention. This holistic approach connects body, mind, and spirit, helping you ground yourself in the present moment and open your heart to the possibilities of the year ahead.
Grab your journal and pen, roll out your yoga mat, and let’s begin this transformative practice.
Step 1: Reflect on 2024 – Celebrate Your Wins
Yoga Practice: Start in a comfortable seated position. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and gently stretch your arms overhead. Move into a few rounds of Cat-Cow to awaken your spine, then flow through a few Sun Salutations to energise your body and bring awareness to your breath.
After moving, rest in Child’s Pose or Savasana (Corpse Pose), placing your hands over your heart. Visualise moments from 2024 when you felt proud, joyful, or accomplished. Allow the sensations of these moments to fill your body—warmth, gratitude, pride, or peace.
Journaling Prompt: Sit comfortably and write down your wins, big or small. What did you achieve? How did you grow? Let yourself feel these successes fully. Wayne Dyer once said, “You don’t attract what you want. You attract what you are.” By embodying the energy of gratitude and success, you tell the universe: more of this, please.
Step 2: Letting Go – Release What No Longer Serves
Yoga Practice: Begin with a gentle twist, such as Supine Twist or Seated Spinal Twist, to detoxify the body and release tension. Transition into forward folds, like Standing Forward Bend or Wide-Legged Forward Fold, to surrender and let go. Finally, end with a grounding pose like Warrior II or Tree Pose, imagining yourself releasing anything heavy into the earth.
Journaling Prompt: Write a list of grudges, habits, disappointments, or beliefs you’re ready to release. What’s been weighing you down? Pour it all out onto the page.
Fire Release Ceremony: Safely burn this list after your yoga practice, visualising the smoke carrying these burdens away. Feel lighter with each breath, knowing you’ve created space for new growth.
Step 3: Get Intentional – Dream Big for 2025
Yoga Practice: Begin with heart-opening poses like Camel Pose, Bridge Pose, or Cobra Pose to invite inspiration and courage. Flow into balancing poses like Dancer’s Pose or Eagle Pose, imagining yourself gracefully aligning with your dreams. Finish in a seated meditation, visualising your ideal 2025.
Journaling Prompt: Reflect on the key areas of your life: love, friendship, career, business, spirituality, and health. For each category, ask yourself: What do I want to bring into my life?
Take it one step further—write a list of feelings you want to associate with each area. For example, under “friendship,” you might write: connection, laughter, trust, and joy. Under “health,” you might write: vitality, strength, and balance. By focusing on feelings, you align your desires with the energy you wish to embody.
A Ritual of Renewal
This practice isn’t about ticking off goals; it’s about honouring your journey and consciously co-creating your future. Return to this ritual throughout the year as a source of grounding and inspiration.
As you move into 2025, revisit your lists of feelings often. Let them guide your actions and decisions, and watch as the universe responds to your clarity and intention.
